Happy New Year! The month of January gets its name from a Roman god named Janus who is most often pictured with two faces, one looking forward and the other one backward. According to tradition, Janus was the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, doorways, passages and endings.
New Year’s Resolutions (if you make them) do what the month of January suggests – look to what the past has given us and then look ahead to what our hopes and dreams might be in the coming year. This can be a healthy practice, not only in our personal life but in our life at Two Steeples as well.
God has once again proved faithful. Perhaps things have not always gone the way we would have liked them to – at times we may have been given more losses and grief that we might have thought we could bear. But God has been with us as He has promised He would be and over the past year He has also given us joy in our own families and in the church relationship we shared with each other.
We now look forward to the future and even though it may be clouded with uncertainty, let’s build on God’s promises. God promises to be with us. God’s presence is not determined by our ability to see Him, it is built on His watchful eyes continuing to always see us! That will not change in the New Year.
God promises to love us as valuable people of His creation. We at times may struggle to love ourselves and the people closest to us, but God’s love will never waver. He is faithful yesterday, today, and always. God continues to forgive and gently and firmly helps us to grow. Our God does not leave us wallowing in messes we make in our lives or in the messes we make in the lives of others. He wipes clean our slate and gives us hope for the future.
And finally, God promises us that we will always be His people, the “apple of his eye.” This is so not because we want it to be but because He wants it to be. Our God is a faithful God who has guarded us in the past and will guard us in the future. Either way you look, God is there.
As we greet with New Year with the questions it can bring, may we, resting in the promises of our God, step into our futures with confidence and boldness.
Happy New Year,
